The leading theatre companies for ballet are the Bolshoi in Moscow (dating to 1776) and the Mariinski in St. Petersburg (founded in 1735). Russian ballet had a formative role in Western dance through a number of figures, such as Sergey Diaghilev and Vaslav Nijinsky.
