Many students come to college looking for classes that will help them build a
successful and interesting careers as teachers, business people, communicators,
scientists, etc. Others want to grow intellectually, to change the world, or to
change themselves. Language and culture study in the Department of Modern
Languages at UNI offers majors, minors, and elective courses that meet all those
needs, and language programs in French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and
other languages. Below are resources designed to help you decide what studying
another language might do for you.
ACEBO - publishes training materials (print, audio, and video) for court interpreters, medical interpreters, and administrative hearing interpreters working in English and any of a number of other language, including the following: Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
American Cultural Exchange - International language and culture training and education, translating, publishing, travel, placement, and more.
The Boston Language Institute - Many services, including education (language classes in most world languages), translation, consulting, etc.
Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) - At the University of Minnesota. Multicultural and multilingual education, research, and assessment organization. Research and graduate student employment opportunities, conferences, and other research projects.
Center for Applied Linguistics - Lots of resources (projects and articles) about language learning, teaching, and more. National directory of foreign language programs, free publications for teachers, and more.
Engineering with Language Homepage - Index of schools offering Engineering degrees with a language component in Europe, and a discussion of why an engineer should know another language.
